What are you listening for?
Listen for sounds you find INTERESTING. This is the most important part.
Listen for sounds that are UNIQUE to your neighborhood. (The buzzing of the street light on your corner, a local sound at your nearby park, train tracks, etc.)
Make sure the sound is relatively CLEAR. While we’re having you take videos as well, the sounds are first and foremost.
Check your LIGHTING/FRAMING. Your video does not have to be professional quality, but it helps if we can see the object making the sound without interference or too many shadows. Videos will be displayed in the final product. Horizontal video is best (AKA turn your phone on its side).
Aim for VARIETY. We want short sounds, long sounds, loud sounds, soft sounds, weird sounds– you get the idea. Some examples would be the crunching of leaves underfoot, clunk of a car door, sewer grates as cars roll over them, playground noises, dogs at the dog park, aluminum bat hitting a ball. Find your own exciting and unique sounds. We know you have it in you!
The above are simply guidelines TO GET YOU STARTED.
